What to Wear to a Graduation

many graduation ceremonies are held outside

The months of May and June are full of graduation ceremonies.  Colleges near and far bid adieu to the young minds they have helped shape during 4 years.  High schools follow suite with most ceremonies held in June.   There can even be a Kindergarten graduation ceremony to contend with.  With tons of self-appointed paparazzi preserving all these cherished moments for decades to come, you might want to think about dress attire for your loved ones.

This weekend, we’re off to Maryland for my niece’s graduation ceremony from college.  Some of my family members thought I was insane to mention booking hotel reservations back in January.  But let’s face it, if every graduating senior has 4-5 family members descending upon the town at the same time the hotels are going to fill up pretty quickly.  If you wait until the last moment the only accommodations left will be an hours drive away.  Forget that!!

Since I booked my hotel months ago, my main concern this week is to think about our apparel.  It’s an outdoor ceremony and seating under the tent is limited.  We’ll need outfits that look dressy but can survive sitting on a blanket.  Think Polo.  When you attend a polo match, you’re outdoors, have to maneuver grassy sections and may wind up sitting on a blanket.    My husband will look elegant in his blazer and tan pants ensemble.  The girls will wear spring dresses.  Josette will wear a lilac colored Lady in Waiting dress because it’s not too frilly or girly-girl.  The dress has a bias cut skirt and cap sleeves.  The silk material doesn’t look too fancy yet has an elegant feeling for the occasion.  I’m mixed on what Alex should wear.  I love the ivory and pink Princess dress.  It looks charming on her and mothers love it for a kindergarten graduation.  Since my daughter is going in the second grade, she prefers the sleeveless version of the dress.  I’ll check the weather report before selecting the final contender.  I love the 2 -Thai silk that both dresses are made from because the fabric holds up well and doesn’t show wrinkles or dirt.  Let’s face it, when you are outdoors with children, dirt happens.

Now all that’s left is to figure out what I’m wearing…
