selecting the right dress can feel overwhelming
There are as many styles of communion dresses as there are girls making their first communion. If you are looking for the perfect first communion dress you might be a bit overwhelmed and not exactly sure where to start. As the owner of A Little Indulgence we’ve been making first communion dresses for years and as a mother of two girls, I’m intimately familiar with wanting the perfect first communion dress.
First you’ll need to find out the guidelines. Ask the religious education instructor about what is permitted. Once you know the requirements, you can then select a style. Basically, there are 3 types of communion dresses: traditional, classic and modern. Traditional communion dresses are long formal dresses and have lavish embellishments. This style is sometimes called “old world” as traditional dresses were commonly worn in European Countries. The classic communion dress is less elaborate than the traditional dress, is tea length and has some form of pearl or beaded embellishment. Modern communion dresses have very simple lines and may be knee length in design. Discuss the different styles with your daughter and be prepared to work with her personality in selecting HER first communion dress. A tomboy may rebel at the thought of wearing a traditional communion dress while a girly-girl may be disappointed with a modern communion dress.
Give yourself plenty of time to select a communion dress. Plan on 4-6 months to find the right dress. Start in January for a April/May communion. Some stores carry communion dresses in stock, while others carry sample dresses. Generally, more elaborate styles are made to order and take 8 weeks for delivery. Many of the communion dresses at A Little Indulgence are made to order but we do keep a few communion dresses in-stock for immediate delivery. If you are unsure about the size, go with a larger size. Children have a funny habit of growing and you don’t want the dress to be too small. You can always have alterations done 1 month before the event.
