Many years ago (too many to count) I lived in France and learned something about fashion tips that has stayed with me. It’s quite simple really. There’s no magic bullet and I don’t charge $99.99 to download. Simply put, the secret fashion tip to having personal style is to work with what you have.
This is a profound statement for anyone but especially for mothers of young girls. After all our daughters are growing into young ladies and need to learn some basic tips of how to acquire their own fashion style. I’m not going to get into a discussion about the superficiality of appearances since I STRONGLY believe that aesthetics are important and appearances do count. If you don’t agree, I respect your opinion and suggest you stop reading.
So back to my profound statement related to fashion tips…French women learn from a young age to find their best feature and play it up. They are less concerned with the latest, greatest, must have item. They learn what looks good on them and what they should never wear. I learned that I look better in an empire-waist dress. I look pathetic in a drop-waist dress. Guess what I never wear? Bravo!! It doesn’t matter if it’s the latest, greatest, hot off the runway, must have item. If it’s not flattering, it’s not an option. Over time I’ve figured out what works better with my body and I’ve stuck with those styles.
As mothers we need to teach our daughters to work with what they love about themselves. Maybe it’s their eyes, maybe it’s their height, maybe it’s their collarbone. We need to teach our daughters to select clothing that emphasizes that element. Our daughters will learn to build upon successes rather than jump to another trend. Over time our daughters will acquire a sense of style that will be as unique as their personality.
